Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Hornets split pair of matches to open SWAC play

Defeat Prairie View A&M 3-0 , Fall to Grambling 3-2

Baton Rouge, La. | Alabama State was not going to relinquish its hold on the conference with ease. Grambling knew that to put an end to the Lady Hornets 43-match win streak, it would have to fight.

Holding a 2-0 advantage, Alabama State appeared to deflate Grambling's night when it roared back from a 24-20 deficit in the third frame to knot the score at 24-24.  The Tigers regained their composure, however, winning the next two points to force a fourth stanza. They carried over that momentum and outhit the Lady Hornets in the fourth (.189 - .049) and fifth sets (.261 - .040) en route to claiming a 3-2 (25-14, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25, 10-15) victory.

While the outcome was difficult to digest, Alabama State had a bevy of production from multiple players who recorded season and career-highs. Five Lady Hornets recorded at least seven kills and junior Bayle' Bennett recorded a double-double (13 kills, 12 digs). Kori Kutsch topped the 40-assist plateau for the second time this season (42) while Kayla Torres had a season-high 26 digs. Candace Martin posted a season-high seven blocks, freshman Cheyenne Rocker notched a career-best eight kills and Krysta Medearis headlined the production with 16 kills.

The Lady Hornets (4-14, 1-1) connected on 38 of 84 attacks (.274) for their highest kill percentage since August 25th. Freshman Taryn King amassed a season-best 10.5 points and tied her career-high with nine kills while Medearis added a team-high 10 kills. Bennett connected on nine attacks, the highest output for the Chicago, Ill. native since September 8th (Northern Colorado). Rocker (six points) hit .364, putting away five of her 11 attacks and Kutsch added 35 helpers, the senior's third, 30-assist effort for the year.

Alabama State plays another doubleheader tomorrow with matches against Southern (10 a.m.) and Texas Southern (7 p.m.).
