MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's soccer team claimed a 2-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State Friday night for their third consecutive victory in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.
"It's nice to get off to this 3-0 start in conference, but there's a lot of games left to play." Alabama State head coach
Jodie Smith said. "I thought we controlled the tempo of the game, and I want us to continue to build on the things we are doing now and find more of a rhythm offensively."
Alabama State (3-6, 3-0 SWAC) was able to strike first in the 31
st minute when
Teaggan Ilela maneuvered through a couple of defenders and fired a pass on target to
McKenna Lupori for her first goal of the season.
The lead stayed that way into intermission and through the first 20 minutes of the second half until
Ilela took a pass from
Shyann Cordova and beat the goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season, giving Alabama State a 2-0 lead.
Alabama State finished the day with 18 shots, including 12 on goal, while MVSU (3-5-2, 0-2-1) finished with six shots and three on goal.
Gianna Guyot was credited with her second shutout of the season while making three saves in 90 minutes for the Lady Hornets.
The Lady Hornets return to the field Sunday afternoon against Alcorn State. The match is set to kick at 1 pm at the ASU Soccer Complex.
