MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State defeated Alcorn State 10-0 Sunday afternoon with six different Lady Hornets scoring a goal.
The 10 goals were the most in a match in school history. It also marks the 175
th win for head coach
Jodie Smith.
"We shared the ball very well today. We were able to get a lot of different goal scorers and assists on the score sheet today." Smith said. "I think we got careless at times, but overall we are moving in the right direction"
Alabama State (4-6, 4-0 SWAC) struck early and often as
Shyann Cordova opened the scoring less than ten minutes into the match.
Birgit Rijnders had a career-high three goals,
Kayla Tillman and
Meaghan Fielding each recorded two goals while
Ashley Thomas and Kayla McKenzie-Edmonds also got in the scoring column. It was the first goals of the season for Cordova, Tillman, Fielding and Edmonds, marking nine players that have scored a goal this season.
On the opposite end, goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot led the Lady Hornets to their third shutout of the season. Defender
Mercedes Padilla contributed with three assists and Fielding added two.
Nineteen players saw action and logged more than 15 minutes in the match.
The Lady Hornets hit the road next week and continue conference play against Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. The game on Friday against PVAMU kicks off at 7 pm in Prairie View, Texas.
