WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. | Alabama State posted a strong showing at Purdue's Gene Edmonds Invitational Saturday, turning in three first place results.
Nia Jack (60 meter dash),
Jamie Brown (long jump) and
Marcus Cade (triple jump) all notched first place showings in their respective events, besting competitors from Purdue and Louisville, among others.
TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN)
- Junior Nia Jack tied for first in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.59 seconds
- Jack also turned in a time of 25.68 in the 200 meter for a sixth place finish
- Sophomore Kyana Evans grabbed second in the 200 meter dash (25.38), besting a talented crop of runners from Purdue and Louisville; she also grabbed fourth place in the 400 meters
- The Lady Hornets placed four runners in the top 10 in the 200 meter dash
- Freshman Vinelle Grant grabbed a fifth place finish in the 600 meter
- The quartet of Evans, Ulani Toussaint, Grant and Amari Newsom picked up six points with a third place finish in the 4X400 meter relay
- Junior Kristen Thompson (12.81 m) narrowly missed a top five finish in the shot put

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN)
- Jamie Brown grabbed first in the long jump, vaulting 7.40 meters on his final turn
- Alabama State had two performers finish in the top three of the triple jump, with freshman Marcus Cade (14.38 meters) posting a first place finish while Brown (13.69 meters) came in third
- Junior Norris Spike sprinted to a fourth place finish with a time of 6.92 seconds in the 60 meter dash
- Caesar Kemp (16.71 meters) finished second overall in the shot put
- The Hornets placed six runners inside the top 13 of the 200 meter dash, led by Kevin Spraggins (sixth place) time of 22.43 seconds
- Freshman Matthew Kibet (9:18.54) was the top Alabama State runner in the 3000 meter run
- Chaaka Trahan (8.54 seconds) sprinted to a fifth place showing in the 60 meter hurdles
- Marcus Cade shined in the men's high jump, notching a third place showing behind a jump of 2.05 meters

- Alabama State will make a quick turnaround with a meet at Samford (January 17-19) next week in Birmingham, Ala.
