MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road for their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game, facing Alabama A&M at Bill Harris Arena Saturday evening.
The game tips at 5 pm, or immediately following the women's game, and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network with pregame set for 4:45 pm. The game was originally scheduled for T.M. Elmore Gymnasium in Huntsville, but was moved do to work on the Bulldogs' home facility. The game will now be played at the site of the SWAC semifinals and finals last this year.
Tickets are still available for $15 general admission and $20 for premium (reserved).
LAST TIME OUT
- Alabama State took a 12-point lead over Mississippi Valley State at the break, before the Delta Devils stormed back to take an eight-point lead with 1:27 to play. The Hornets came right back and tied the game with 23 seconds remaining to force overtime.
- In overtime, Jacoby Ross hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 79-all late in overtime, and Tobi Ewuosho sank a short jumper with eight-tenths of a second remaining to win 81-79 on the road at the Harrison HPER Complex.
- Reginald Gee and Ross led Alabama State with 16 points each, while AJ Farrar added 15 points. Gee grabbed seven rebounds, while Ewuosho led the team with eight rebounds.
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE ALABAMA STATE HORNETS
- Alabama State has won three of their first four games in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play for the first time since 2014 (and the fourth time overall since 2009). The Hornets finished 12-6 in 2014, 8-10 in 2013 and 9-9 in 2012 in conference play in the three previous seasons in which they started 3-1 in conference play.
- The Hornets are not off to their best start, however, as they went 4-0 in 2009 and 2015 – starting out 7-0 in conference play in 2015 en route to finishing 14-4 in conference play, before falling in the championship game.
- Gee sits at 942 career points, just 58 points short of 1,000 for his career after his 16-point performance against Mississippi Valley State. At his current pace, Gee could cross the milestone on the road in conference game in four games.
- Ewuosho had a big week for Alabama State this past week in conference play, recording a double-double (11 points / 12 rebounds) on the road in a loss to UAPB. He followed that up with eight points and eight rebounds off the bench, including the game-winning shot in overtime at Mississippi Valley State.
- Since changing their starting lineup, the Hornets have gone 3-3. They have also won five of the last six tips to start the games during that same stretch.
- Alabama State has played against four of the top 48 scorers in the country, including a pair in the top 10 this season. They have faced the nation's top scorer in Chris Clemons (29.6) from Campbell and the ninth best scorer in Mike Daum (23.7) from South Dakota State.
AN INSIDE LOOK AT ALABAMA A&M
- The Bulldogs enter the game after falling to UAPB at the buzzer on a Martaveous McKnight shot, to start the conference race off 1-3 (win over Grambling State).
- Andre Kennedy leads Alabama A&M in scoring at 9.9 points per game, with the Bulldogs having three players averaging over nine points per game (but none in double figures).
- Jalen Reeder averages 9.7 points per game, while Arthur Johnson averages 9.4 per game.
- Kennedy leads the team in rebounding at 5.8 rebounds per game, while Gerron Scissum averages 5.0 rebounds per game.
- Alabama A&M is playing under their third different head coach in three years.
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Alabama State leads the all-time series over Alabama A&M, 81-30, including the last five games in the series. The Hornets have also won six of the last eight in the series.
- Gee has played the most games against Alabama A&M of any Hornet on the roster, playing in four, while also averaging 13.3 points per game.
- Ross averaged 13.0 points per game in a pair of games for Alabama State against Alabama A&M, while Branden Johnson has averaged 12.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in a pair of games against the Bulldogs.
- Alabama State and Alabama A&M played a triple overtime game two years ago in Montgomery at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, with the Hornets winning 97-89.
