@BamaStateMBB hits the road, faces Texas Southern Saturday

Hornets are in toughest stretch of conference schedule to date

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road for one of the toughest stretches on their schedule, facing Texas Southern Saturday night at the H&PE Arena in Houston.

The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 pm, and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning 15 minutes before tip. Tickets are still available by clicking here.

Alabama State (8-10, 6-1 SWAC) faces three of the top five teams in the conference over the next three games, beginning with the Tigers. The Hornets then face Prairie View A&M (top of the conference) and UAPB (tied with Texas Southern) in the next two games.

An inside look at the Alabama State Hornets
  • Alabama State sits one game behind Prairie View A&M for the conference lead as the season approaches the midway point this weekend.
  • Junior Reginald Gee sits at 996 career points, just four points away from joining the 1000-point club at Alabama State – a club that three of the coaches sitting on the bench for Alabama State have reached.
  • Gee leads the team in scoring at 15.2 points per game, and is shooting 45.4 (84-of-185) percent from the floor, and 48.1 (37-of-77) percent from beyond the arc. He has scored in double figures 13 times this season and 50 times in his career.
  • Jacoby Ross is averaging 13.8 points per game as the team's second-leading scorer, while dishing out 45 assists. He is shooting 38 (46-of-121) percent from the free throw line, and 79.6 (43-of-54) percent from the free throw line. He has scored in double figures 13 times this season and 28 times in his career.
  • Tobi Ewuosho has scored in double figures in the last three games off the bench, and four times in the last five years. The junior scored a career-high 17 points against Alcorn State last weekend.
  • AJ Farrar recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds against Southern in the Hornets' come-from-behind win Monday night.

An inside look at the Texas Southern Tigers
  • Texas Southern is currently tied for third in the conference with Jackson State and UAPB, and sitting two games back of Alabama State in second and three back of Prairie View A&M in first.
  • The Tigers enter the contest after coming from behind to defeat Mississippi Valley State 65-62 on the road Monday night, splitting their road swing last week.
  • Jeremy Combs leads the team in scoring (and is second in rebounding) at 14.2 points per game and has grabbed 8.1 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Jayln Patterson – another transfer – is second on the team in scoring at 13.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, while dishing out 70 total assists.
  • Trayvon Reed, who has played in just 15 games, is third on the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 8.5 rebounds per game. He also has added a team-high 25 blocked shots after leading the conference in blocked shots last season.
  • Texas Southern made noise around the basketball world in the non-conference portion of their schedule with wins over Baylor and Oregon on the road. They also defeated Texas A&M on the road prior to the start of the conference portion of the schedule.

Inside the Series
  • Texas Southern leads the all-time series 41-35, including winning the last 10 in the series to take command. They trailed in the series 35-31 at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season.
  • The Tigers won both meetings in Houston last season by a combined 32 points – including winning 90-76 in the SWAC Tournament opening round.

What's Next
  • Alabama State stays on the road and travels to Prairie View A&M to complete the Texas road swing Monday night, with tip set for 7:30 pm.
  • The Hornets return home to UAPB a week from Saturday at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
