@BamaStateWSC completes weekend sweep, streak reaches four

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Mary Martin Mooneyham scored her third goal in two matches Sunday afternoon as Alabama State needed double overtime to reach four consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victories, defeating Mississippi Valley State 1-0 on the road.

Alabama State (5-10, 4-2 SWAC) and Mississippi Valley State (1-10-1, 0-6 SWAC) were deadlocked at the end of regulation and finished the first overtime scoreless. Mooneyham struck for the game-winning goal 109th minute for Alabama State, ending the match and extending the unbeaten streak for the Hornets.

The match was the second match of the season that ended 1-0, with the Lady Hornets winning both in conference play. It was also the seventh match this season decided by one goal, with Alabama State having won four of those matches.

Alabama State returns to action Friday night at home against Texas Southern, with kick set 6 pm at the ASU Soccer Complex. It will be the first of three consecutive matches at the ASU Soccer Complex to close out the regular slate at home.

Quotable from head coach Jodie Smith
"We really had to fight out there in tough conditions. I loved the focus we had defensively, especially in a close game. The goal was a thrilling overtime goal that we had to work."
