MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Janae Brown led Alabama State with a pair of goals Friday night as the Hornets grabbed their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory of 2019 with a 3-2 victory over Jackson State at the ASU Soccer Complex.
Alabama State (2-10, 1-2 SWAC) fell behind early when Jalah Carter scored in the fifth minute of the contest to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered when a corner kick glanced off the post right to the foot of
Mary Martin Mooneyham who one-touched the ball into the back of the night to tie the match. The goal from the Montgomery-native is her first career goal and came on her birthday in the win.
Brown scored her first of two goals on the night in the 34th minute to give Alabama State a 2-1 lead, beating her defender and put the ball past the Tigers' goalkeeper.
Early in the second half, she found the back of net again after a pass from
Ashley Thomas set up one-on-one with the goalkeeper. She pushed the ball past the keeper in the 51st minute for the 3-1 lead for Alabama State, before Jackson State scored on a Brynn Walker goal in the 65th minute to pull Jackson State to within a goal at 3-2.
Quotables
"We've really talked about competing for the full 90 minutes. We've given up a lot of leads this year so I'm most proud that we stayed in the game and competed for the full 90 minutes and not blow a lead. I was really proud of our effort today." –
Head Coach Jodie Smith on the overall thought of the game.
