MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State used an early second half goal to complete a weekend sweep in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action, defeating Southern 1-0 at the ASU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Alabama State (3-10, 2-2 SWAC) and Southern (1-8, 0-3 SWAC) battled to a scoreless draw in the first half, before the Hornets were able to get on the board in the second half. Alabama State used a goal off the foot of
Isabella Beortegui off an assist by
Janae Brown in the 51st minute to take the lead and hold on for the win.
The goal is the team-leading sixth for Beortegui, which has her tied for the lead among the entire conference. The assist from Brown was her second on the season.
Alabama State outshot Southern 16-7 on the day, including 9-4 in shots on goal.
Hrafnhildur Hjaltalin recorded the shutout in the win for the Hornets, her second of the season.
Alabama State hits the road for a pair of games next weekend in Mississippi, facing Alcorn State Friday (4 pm) and Mississippi Valley State Sunday afternoon.
