HOUSTON, Texas | Alabama State hits the court for the second time in three days Tuesday night when they face Houston at the Fertitta Center in game that will be carried nationally on ESPNU.
The game tips at 7 pm (cst) and will also be carried by the Hornet Sports Network beginning with pregame at 6:45 pm.
Alabama State (0-2) enters the contest looking for their first win of the season after road losses to No. 7/8 Gonzaga and Missouri State, both teams picked to win their conferences. The Hornets were within nine against Gonzaga in the second half and were able to get as close as six in the second half against Missouri State on Sunday after battling for the lead in the first half.
Tobi Ewuosho leads a trio of players averaging nine points or better through the first two games, averaging 9.5 points per game on 46.2 (6-of-13) percent shooting from the floor. The senior is also tied for the team lead in rebounding with
Brandon Battle at 4.5 rebounds per game. Meanwhile,
Jacoby Ross and Battle are each averaging 9.0 points per game through the first two games.
Kevin Holston is averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 assists through the first two games of the season.
Alabama State is shooting 40.2 (41-of-102) percent from the floor as a team, and 38.9 (14-of-36) percent from beyond the arc. They are also shooting 66.7 (18-of-27) percent from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, Houston (who finished last season with 30-plus wins), will be taking the floor for their first game of the season after an exhibition contest last week. The Cougars enter the night following a 106-42 win over Angelo State in the exhibition game. Sophomore Nate Hinton led the way with 18 points and 13 rebounds, as six Houston players reached double figures.
The game will mark the first time under
Lewis Jackson that Alabama State has faced Houston or head coach Kelvin Sampson.
