PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Seventh-seeded Alabama State will open the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Thursday afternoon against second-seeded Prairie View A&M on their home field, looking for their third title in the last four years.
Alabama State (5-14) faced Prairie View A&M earlier this season, giving up a second half goal in a 2-1 defeat to the Lady Panthers. In that game,
McKenna Lupori scored the lone goal in the 81st minute on a penalty kick.
The Hornets dropped six conference games this season, with five of those being by one goal. The only game that was more than one goal came in the conference opener against Grambling State. Of the 10 games played in conference this season by Alabama State, nine were decided by one goal.
Isabella Beortegui leads Alabama State with six goals on the season and is the team leader in points with 12; while
Ashley Thomas has added four goals and an assist (nine points) from her defender position. The duo is joined at the top of the leaderboard by
Mary Martin Mooneyham (eight points) with four goals and
Janae Brown (eight points) with three goals and a pair of assists.
Meaghan Fielding has added seven points (three goals and a pair of assists) this season for Alabama State.
Hrafnhildur Hjaltalin leads Alabama State with a goals against average just over two and has recorded three shutouts on the year.
The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 pm Thursday in Prairie View (Texas).
