MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State will look to win their second consecutive road conference game this weekend when they travel to face Texas Southern.
The game is set to kick at 2 pm at BBVA Stadium, with pregame set for 1:30 pm for the Hornet Sports Network. It can also be seen regionally on AT&T SportsNet SW.
Alabama State (4-4, 3-2 SWAC) sits two games back of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Division leading Alcorn State, and is still in the hunt for the division crown but will need some help from other teams in the conference and a win over Texas Southern. The Hornets enter the contest off their first shutout since 2012 with a 27-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State.
Meanwhile, Texas Southern (0-9, 0-5 SWAC) enters the game on Senior Day looking for their first win of the season with an offense that is averaging over 423 yards of total offense and 23.4 points per game.
The Series vs. Texas Southern
Alabama State leads the all-time series with Texas Southern 19-12-2, including winning the last two games of the series (including in Houston in 2017).
The series started in 1983 and the Hornets have won seven of the last eight meetings dating back to 2011, with the last Texas Southern win coming in 2016 when they won 31-27.
Game Notes
Since 1999, Alabama State has represented the East division four different times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2010) in the SWAC Championship game.
Alabama State gave head coach
Donald Hill-Eley his first win at the helm of the Hornets back in 2017 when they defeated Texas Southern 23-16 in his first game as the interim head coach.
Alabama State junior kicker
Hunter Hanson was named the SWAC Specialist of the Week this week after his performance against Mississippi Valley State. The Montgomery native finished the day with three extra points and was perfect in field goals as he connected on both attempts – 39 and 40 yards.
The Hornets recorded their first shutout of the season against Mississippi Valley State last weekend, and their first since 2012 – a 45-0 victory over Texas Southern.
Michael Jefferson has caught 32 passes heading into the seventh game of the season. He is just 16 catches short of the top 12 all-time in a single season, as Reggie Brown (1990) and T.C. McWilliams (2012) each caught 48.
The Hornets have had four players rush for 100 yards under head coach
Donald Hill-Eley since he took over the program, with two of those coming this season –
Duran Bell (10-112) and
Ezra Gray (23-104) – which happened on the same field against UAB earlier this season.
