Govern hits for the cycle, Eastern Illinois sweeps @BamaStateBB

Alabama State scored a pair of runs in three separate innings in loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Jimmy Govern hit for the cycle for Eastern Illinois as the Panthers defeated Alabama State 15-6 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in non-conference action Wednesday night.

Govern finished the night 4-for-6 for Eastern Illinois (6-9) as he picked up a leadoff home run, followed by a double in the third. He collected his single in the seventh, before a triple in the ninth to finish off the cycle. He had four of the 15 hits for Eastern Illinois on the night, as they got to five Alabama State pitchers including starter Alex Castro (0-1). He finished the night with 1.0 inning pitched and allowed three runs off of three hits with a strikeout.

The Hornets' bullpen pitched the final eight innings of the contest, with Manny Bezares logging the longest outing of the night at 3.0 innings pitched.
At the plate, Alabama State picked up seven hits, with six players having those hits including Chris Lewis who finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Eastern Illinois finished with three other players other than Govern to pick up multiple hits.

Jesse Wainscott (1-0) picked up the win, as he was one of six pitchers used on the night. He finished the night going 5.0 innings and allowed a pair of runs off of five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Alabama State returns to action this weekend as they return to conference play against Alabama A&M at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. The series starts with a single game on Friday at 6 pm, followed by single games on Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is $5 for all home baseball games.
