Hornets fall behind early before late comeback falls short

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fell behind early before a late comeback came up short to Alabama A&M, dropping a 5-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Friday night.

Alabama A&M scored a pair of runs in each the first and second inning to take a 4-0 lead before Alabama State (9-9, 4-2 SWAC) could get on track. The Bulldogs used a single and a sacrifice fly in the top half of the first inning to jump on top 2-0. They came right back with a two-run single in the second to push the lead to 4-0.

Alabama State was able to get on the board in the sixth when Santiago Garcia reached on a single to score to score Eriq White and trim the lead to 4-1. They got another run in the eighth when Garcia doubled home White to trim the deficit to 4-2.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the ninth, before Alabama State was able to get on the board again in the bottom of the night. Yamil Pagan singled home Chris Lewis to trim the lead to 5-3, before White recorded a sacrifice fly to score Oscar Prioleau to trim the deficit to 5-4. Alabama State had a chance, however, Pagan was stranded in scoring position when the final out was recorded.

White led Alabama State at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a run batted in, while Pagan finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in. The duo combined for five of the six Hornets' hits.

Darrius Wright (2-1) suffered the loss working 7.0 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on 11 hits with seven strikeouts. Jeremy Rivera came on to pitch the final two innings and allowed one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The two teams will meet tomorrow evening at 6 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Tickets are available for $5 at the gate for each home baseball game.
