ORLANDO, Fla. | Alabama State had several top 10 finishes in the second outdoor meet of the season, the Black and Gold Challenge hosted by Central Florida this weekend.
The men's 4x100-meter relay captured gold in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.53 seconds. They finished 0.04 seconds ahead of South Carolina and nearly 0.50 seconds ahead of Northeastern in third. The second team entered in the relay finished fourth in a time of 41.42 seconds – the only team with two in the top five of the event.
Meanwhile, the 4x400-meter relay team on the women's side captured gold with a time of 3:42.33; finishing three seconds ahead of second place South Carolina.
Charminqu Hackney led Alabama State on the track with a second place finish in the 100-meter dash, finishing second by just 0.19 seconds with a time of 11.57 seconds. She was joined in the top five by
Nia Jack who finished fourth with a time of 11.66 seconds. On the men's side in the 100-meter dash,
David East finished third with a time of 10.55 seconds, followed closely by teammate
Norris Spike with a time of 10.67 seconds to finish fourth.
Jack finished eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.21 seconds, giving her two top 10 finishes in the sprint competitions. East also recorded his second top 10 finish in the sprints with a third place finish in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.22 seconds.
Lezoghia Member-Menah finished seventh in the event with a time of 21.61 seconds.
Ulani Toussant kept the top 10 finishes alive on the women's side with a third place finish with a time of 55.39 seconds, while
Kyana Evans finished ninth with a time of 57.38 seconds. On the men's side, Member-Menah finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.15 seconds – just 0.02 seconds away from second. Meanwhile,
Kevin Spraggins finished fifth in a time of 48.68 seconds.
Shamaria Lovett, an NCAA participant in the hurdles last season, finished second in the 100-meter hurdles this weekend with a time of 13.39 seconds – just 0.21 seconds away from the top spot. Meanwhile, Ariyanna Val finished ninth in a time of 14.52 seconds. Evans, who competed in the Junior Nationals in the hurdles last season, finished eighth in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.50.
The women's 4x100-meter relay finished second in the event with a time of 45.39 seconds, finishing behind only Central Florida in a time of 44.61 seconds. In the women's 800-meter run,
Vinnelle Grant finished third overall with a time of 2:17.33, while
Kevin Smith finished sixth on the men's side in the event with a time of 1:54.03.
Ricky Thornton finished 10th overall with a time of 1:54.81.
Arion Span finished third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:37.71, while she finished eighth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:26.65. A pair of runners finished inside the top 10 in the steeplechase,
Mariyah Archibald seventh (women – 7:50.46) and
Kevin Smith second (men – 6:15.79).
Joshua Coffelt finished fourth on the men's side with a time of 6:23.55
Latesha Locker finished ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.58 meters (5-02.25), while
Marcus Cade finished fourth in the same event on the men's side. He finished with a height of 2.00 meters (6-06.75), and finished just behind Kobe Franklin (South Carolina), JaTory Reid (North Carolina State) and eventual champion Daniel Armstrong (Marquette).
Meanwhile, in the pole vault competition, Javaris Goins finished eighth overall with a height of 3.80 meters (12-05.50); while teammate
Chaaka Trahan finished 10th overall with a height of 3.65 meters (11-11.75).
In the men's long jump competition, Cade and
Jamie Brown each finished in the top five of the event. Cade finished third overall with a jump of 7.18 meters (23-06.75), while Brown competing in his first outdoor event of the season finished fourth with a jump of 7.17 meters (23.06.25). Cade continued his performance at the meet with his third top five finish as he finished third in the triple jump. He finished with a distance of 13.82 meters (45-04.25).
On the women's side,
Kristen Thompson recorded a top 10 finish in the discus with a throw of 42.17 meters (138-04) to finish sixth overall, while teammate
Xiquaria Reliford finished 10th overall with a throw of 37.36 meters (122-07). On the men's side in the discus,
Caesar Kemp finished seventh overall with a throw of 46.12 meters (151-04); before he finished eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 41.37 meters (135-09).
Kemp also finished in the top 10 in the shot put, recording a third place finish with a throw of 16.50 meters (54-01.75).
Bridgett Williams finished sixth in the women's javelin with a throw of 32.67 meters (107-02), while Locker just missed the top 10 with a throw of 24.62 meters (80-09).
