JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | Javaris Goins posted a pair of top 15 finishes to lead Alabama State at the first day of the Sheraton UNF Spring Break Invitational, hosted by the University of North Florida, Thursday afternoon.
Goins finished 11th in the pole vault competition, narrowly missing out on a top 10 finish, with a height of 4.00 meters (13-01.50); while he finished 13th in the javelin. He hit his mark of 43.15 meters (141-07) on his second throw in the javelin competition. Â
The mark by Goins in the pole vault is the third best this season in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), besting his season mark of 3.80 set last weekend in Orlando. His mark in the javelin – 43.15 meters – is also the fourth best mark of the season in the conference through the first three weeks of outdoor competition.
Meanwhile,
Caesar Kemp finished 15th overall in the hammer throw as he hit his mark of 30.95 meters (101-06) on his second attempt. The mark puts Kemp into the top 10 this season in the conference; while a pair of Hornets finished inside the top 20 in the javelin throw to round out the competition on the men's side Thursday,
Hamza Abdullah (18th) and
Floyd Green (19th).
On the women's side,
Bridgette Williams finished 13th in the javelin competition as she hit her mark of 32.11 meters (105-04); before she finished 14th in the hammer throw. She hit her mark of 46.08 meters (151-02) on her first attempt of the day, pushing her mark to the third in the conference and besting her previous season mark of 41.32 meters.
Three other Lady Hornets participated in the javelin with a pair finishing inside the top 20 –
Latisha Locker (16th) and
Shamaria Lovett (17th). Meanwhile,
Xiquaria Reliford finished 22nd in the hammer throw; while
Kristen Thompson finished 23rd in the javelin and 25th in the hammer throw.
The meet continues Friday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, beginning at 9 am (est).
