GAINESVILLE, Fla. | Alabama State finished the Pepsi Florida Relays Saturday night with three new conference-best marks in the competition, as the meet concluded at the University of Florida.
Marcus Cade took over the top spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters (6-09.00), hitting the mark on his second attempt. The previous top mark in the conference was held by Deante Crittenden of Prairie View A&M (2.03 meters). Cade finished fifth overall in the competition, just behind Jacob Kelly (Villanova) and Hunter Weeks (Grand Valley State).
He was not the only individual to set the top mark in the conference as
Caesar Kemp topped his conference-leading mark in the shotput, set back at the Black and Gold Challenge (16.50 meters), as he finished ninth in the competition with a mark of 16.96 meters (55-07.75). He hit the mark on his second throw, and finished just behind Chance Ehrnsberger of Ohio State at 16.99 meters.
Meanwhile, the men's 4x100-meter relay topped their previous mark of 40.53 seconds set at the Black and Gold Challenge, as they finished 22nd overall in their race with a mark of 40.30 seconds. The Hornets finished just behind TWCUS at 40.19 seconds, while they finished just behind Iowa at 40.16 seconds and were the 12th fastest team collegiately.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished 16th overall (10th collegiately) in the race with a time of 45.06 seconds. The time was just 0.03 seconds off the fastest time in the conference held by Alabama State, and the Lady Hornets finished just behind AARP at 44.81 seconds and Central Florida at 44.75 seconds.
Alabama State also competed in the 4x800-meter relay competitions, with the women crossing the line 12th overall in a time of 9:06.80. They finished just behind Iowa (9:04.18) and South Carolina (9:02.50). Meanwhile, the men finished 12th overall in a time of 7:39.67. They finished just behind Rutgers (7:37.87) and Iowa (7:36.62).
Alabama State returns to action next weekend in Auburn at the Tiger Track Classic, beginning Friday (April 5) and running through Saturday (April 6).
