@BamaState Tennis steps out of conference play to face UAB

Alabama State travels to Birmingham Friday afternoon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State will step out of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Friday afternoon, taking on in-state foe UAB on the road.

The match is scheduled for a 1 pm start at the downtown Birmingham campus.

Alabama State (3-7, 1-0 SWAC) returns to non-conference play following a 4-2 victory over Jackson State in their last match, two weeks ago, to open SWAC play. The Hornets were able to claim four of the six singles matches for the win.

The Hornets are 2-6 in non-conference action this season, picking up wins over Point (5-2) back on January 24 and North Alabama (7-0) back on February 10. Both of those matches took place at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, while the Hornets have dropped all five non-conference matches away from home.

Ion Efrim leads Alabama State in singles play with a 6-1 record, including wins in his last four matches. Efrim has won four of his six matches at number one singles, and is also 2-0 at number two singles. Meanwhile, Alexis Collard is 6-2 on the season in singles play with five of his wins coming at number three singles for the Hornets.

Tomas Fernandez (4-5) is the only other player with more than two wins on the season in singles play for the Hornets, winning a pair of matches at number three and four singles.

The Hornets are 23-28 overall in singles action, while they have won nine matches in doubles play. The team of Fernandez and Carl-Louis Luckmann have won three matches (all at number two doubles) to lead Alabama State, while three other teams have recorded a pair of wins each.
