@BamaStateTennis closes out regular season at home this weekend

Both teams will be in action Saturday and Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State closes out the regular season in both tennis programs this weekend with matches against Florida A&M and Spring Hill.

The match with Florida A&M begins at 10 am on Saturday, while the match with Spring Hill begins at 1 pm on Sunday with both being held at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. All matches held on the Alabama State campus are free and open to the public.

The Alabama State (8-9) men enter the match off a 4-0 loss to Middle Tennessee over the weekend, and finished conference play undefeated in the regular season. The Hornets are in search of their third consecutive conference championship at next weekend's conference championship tournament in New Orleans (La.). This season, Alabama State has played just three non-conference matches at home and have won two (Point and West Alabama).

Ion Efrim leads Alabama State with a 9-2 overall record in singles play, posting a 7-2 record at number one singles and perfect record (4-0) in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play. The senior has won his last three matches, and is 7-1 in his last 10 – with two of those being unfinished. Meanwhile, Alexis Collard is 7-3 on the season, including posting a 6-1 record at number three singles; while Tomas Fernandez (6-6) and Alejo Calvis (6-8) have each posted six singles wins on the season for Alabama State who is 38-38 overall as a team in singles play.

In doubles action, the Hornets are 18-18 overall and are led by the team of Chris Andre and Juan Rodriguez at 5-1, while splitting time at number two and three doubles. Meanwhile, the team of Fernandez and Carl-Louis Luckmann lead Alabama State with six wins on the year in doubles.

Meanwhile, the Alabama State (9-8) women have been off since winning their final conference match of the season against UAPB back on March 23. The Lady Hornets are in search of their third consecutive conference championship next weekend, and will be playing their first non-conference match since March 2.

The Lady Hornets have hosted five non-conference matches at home, winning the home opener against Point. They are led by Lea Krajcovicova at 9-5 (5-1 in conference) in singles play, where she has posted a 5-1 record at number two singles and has four wins at number three singles. Meanwhile, Reka Szentes is 7-5 on the season, playing 10 of her 12 matches at number one singles; while Worthy Goldman (6-5), Maria Popova (6-3) and Urska Velec (6-6) have each won six matches for Alabama State who is 45-36 overall as a team in singles play.

In doubles, the team of Szentes and Velec has posted an 8-4 record to lead Alabama State, with six of those wins coming at number two doubles. The team of Krajcovicova and Gabriela Lackova has posted a 6-4 record this season for Alabama State, who is 22-15 in doubles play overall.

The matches will be the last for the Class of 2019 at home this season, and they will be honored over the weekend.
