JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | Alabama State closed out their competition in the East Preliminary Round on the campus of North Florida Saturday night with a pair of relay events, and a pair of individual events.
The 4x100-meter relay team on the women's side finished 18th overall (sixth in their heat) with a time of 44.68 seconds. They finished less than a second behind the final qualifying time on the night of 43.92 seconds run by Ohio State. The Lady Hornets finished ahead of Penn State, Purdue, Northwestern State, Virginia, Troy and Bethune-Cookman in the race.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, the Hornets finished 15th overall (fourth in their heat) with a season best time of 39.73 seconds. They finished just behind Kentucky (39.56 seconds), who qualified based on finish, and Clemson who ran a time of 39.41 seconds to get in based on time. They finished ahead of South Carolina State, Ohio State, Kennesaw State, Southern Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Miami.
Shamaria Lovett finished 21st overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.45 seconds, finishing just behind Timetria Mitchell of Florida at 13.41 seconds. She finished ahead of runners from Dartmouth, Rider and Duke; while the last time to get in was 13.30 seconds by Summer Thorpe of Notre Dame.
Kevin Spraggins finished with a time of 21.02 seconds in the 200-meters, finishing just behind Tyler Smith of McNeese State (21.00) and Shaun Shivers of Auburn (20.99). The last qualifying time was 20.49 seconds by Akeem Sirlead of North Carolina A&T.
Jamie Brown will begin preparations for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, qualifying Thursday in the long jump. The championship runs from June 5 through June 8 on the campus of the University of Texas.
