MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Puerto Rico broke the strangle hold on the gold medal by Canada in the Pan American games, winning in the championship game.
Former Alabama State star Cesar Rivera played a big role in the Puerto Rican run in the tournament, including seeing action at first base in the final. In that championship game, Puerto Rico defeated Canada 6-1 to end the run of the two-time champions.
Throughout the tournament, Rivera played a big part in victories for Puerto Rico who finished undefeated in the tournament format. He saw action in five games throughout the tournament, playing multiple positions (first base, left field and right field).
His best game of the tournament came in an 8-5 victory over Canada to advance to the semifinals. He finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs; while against Nicaragua in the semifinals, he drew a walk.
