MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Over the last three years, Alabama State has won a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships and reached the semifinal round last season. The senior class of the Hornets look to close out their careers with another push in the conference and it begins this weekend with a pair of road contests to open SWAC play.
Alabama State (1-8) opens conference play on the road against Grambling State Friday night with kick set for 6 pm, before facing UAPB Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.
Team Leaders
Isabella Beortegui was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for her performance against North Alabama and Mercer this week. She recorded a goal in the 90th minute of a 4-3 loss to Mercer, her team-leading fifth of the season.
Ashley Thomas also scored a goal this week for the Hornets, coming against Mercer, which gives her two on the season with several others having one goal each.
McKenna Wiscombe leads the team in assists with three, while
Meaghan Fielding has added a pair of assists this season.
Scouting the Opponents
Grambling State (3-6-1) enters SWAC play having lost four out of their last five matches, with the latest coming against 24th-ranked Texas. Kailey Pena leads the Tigers with a pair of goals on the season.
Meanwhile, UAPB (2-5) enters the weekend after dropping their last two matches, with their last win coming against Jarvis Christian back on September 5. The Lady Lions face Alabama A&M to open conference play on Friday afternoon.
