@BamaStateMBB’s Comeback Bid Falls Short at Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. | Tobi Ewuosho scored 26 and almost helped lead an amazing comeback, but Alabama State fell to Southern, 80-71, in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

After being down by 19 with 14:43 left to play, Alabama State (3-16, 2-4 SWAC) fought back to within three points with 2:52 to go, but couldn't quite catch up to a hot-shooting Southern (7-13, 4-3 SWAC) team. The Jaguars shot 61.4 percent (27-for-44) from the floor in the game.

Nineteen of Ewuosho's career-high 26 points came in the second half, including the old-fashioned three-point play that cut the deficit to three late in the ballgame. The Chicago native was 9-for-12 from the floor and converted seven of his eight free throw attempts.

The comeback was sparked by an 11-2 run around the 10-minute mark of the half that drew things back to single digits. Ewuosho followed up a couple of free throws and a Tyrese Robinson layup with a mid-range jumper and a layup of his own – Kevion Stewart then knocked down a big three pointer to cap the run.

With a resurgent Hornet squad nipping at their heels, the Jaguars responded with back-to-back trips down the floor with three-pointers. ASU thought it had the response it needed, but Leon Daniels' three-pointer from the corner was reviewed and ruled a two.

Joining Ewuosho in double figures was Decardo Day, who dropped 13 in the contest – Day knocked down a couple of threes and was 5-for-7 from the charity stripe.

The Jaguars boasted five different players in double figures, led by 14 points from forward Darius Williams. Southern's center, Amel Kuljuhovic, finished the game a perfect, 6-for-6 from the floor with one of the two late dagger three-pointers.

The Hornets will look to bounce back as they travel to Lorman, Miss., to take on Alcorn State Monday night. The men will tip-off approximately 30 minutes after the women's game that starts at 5:30 p.m. Fans can listen in to the action as Travis Jarome brings the call on the Hornet Sports Network.
