LORMAN, Miss. | Leon Daniels had a career night and Alabama State fought back from a double-digit deficit, before falling to Alcorn State 63-60 at the Davey Whitney Complex Monday night.
Daniels finished the night with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-7 from behind the arc. The senior's only miss came late in the second half as the shot clock was winding down that would have extended Alabama State's lead to four. He also added a team-high six rebounds.
Alabama State finished the night shooting 45.1 (23-of-51) percent from the floor and 50.0 (9-of-18) percent from beyond the arc, while only shooting 38.5 (5-of-13) percent from the free throw line. They grabbed 35 rebounds and recorded 16 assists on 23 made field goals.
Meanwhile, Deshaw Andrews led three Alcorn State players in double figures with 17, while Colby Tillery added 15 and Arne Morris 10 in the win. The Braves finished the night shooting 38.7 (24-of-62) percent from the floor and 33.3 (9-of-27) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 54.5 (6-of-11) percent from the free throw line.
Alabama State took an early lead before an 18-4 run by Alcorn State pushed the lead out to 10 for the Braves in the first half. However, Alabama State answered with a 9-0 run of their own to take a one-point lead in the second half before the two began trading baskets. The Hornets had a chance to tie the game on a three-pointer but the shot out of the hands of
Tyrese Robinson went off the back of the rim with 10 seconds remaining. The Hornets had another chance to cut the lead but missed a free throw late.
Alabama State returns to action Saturday against Prairie View A&M at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, with tip set for 5:30 pm on the Hornet Sports Network.
