Turnovers Plague @BamaStateWBB at Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. | Alcorn State forced 32 Alabama State turnovers and pulled away with a 73-63 win over the Lady Hornets in the Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup Monday night at the Whitney Complex.

The Lady Hornets (5-13, 2-5 SWAC) struggled to get anything going as a team around all the turnovers. That played right into the Lady Braves' (9-11, 5-3 SWAC) game plan, as they entered Monday's contest leading all of Division I in steals and turnovers forced this season.

Aniyah Smith, Jayla Crawford and Ayana Emmanuel combined to score 46 of Alabama State's 63 points in the game, led by Smith's 18. The freshman finished one point shy of tying her career-high set back in November against Mobile.

Crawford finished with 16 to once again continue her hot-shooting streak in conference play, now scoring in double figures in six of the seven SWAC contests in 2020. Emmanuel scored 12 in 21 minutes on the floor before fouling out.

Freshman Dereseia Randle set a career-high of her own, grabbing 10 rebounds in the game. The Hornets' assist-leader this year, Courtney Lee, added six more to move her season total to 59. Alcorn State's top scorer was Kirdis Clark, who tallied 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and six steals.

Notable
- Monday marked the 11th different starting lineup that Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson has used through 18 games in the 2019-2020 season.

- Jayla Crawford once again scored in double figures for ASU with 16 in the contest. Crawford has scored at least 10 points in six of the Lady Hornets' seven SWAC games this season.

- Turnovers plagued the Lady Hornets throughout the contest, turning the ball over 21 times in the first half alone. Alabama State turned it over a total of 32 times in the game – a new season-high.

- Freshman Aniyah Smith finished just shy of setting a new career-high for points with 18 in the contest. Smith's best game came on November 9 against Mobile, when she scored 19 points.
