MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama A&M's Nigeria Jones hit a game-winning three-pointer with 5.5 seconds left to push the Lady Bulldogs past Alabama State, 56-55, in the latest installment of the in-state rivalry Saturday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Â
After
Aniyah Smith hit a go-ahead layup with nine seconds left to put the Lady Hornets (7-16, 4-8 SWAC) up by a pair, Alabama A&M (12-11, 8-4 SWAC) called a timeout and advanced the ball past half court. On the inbound play, Jones pulled up from deep and knocked down the deep three.
Â
The Lady Hornets had one final chance to win it, but
Ayana Emmanuel's layup as time expired rolled around the rim and out. Emmanuel still tied for the team-lead with eight points in the game, while also grabbing five rebounds. Graduate
Victoria Harvey also scored eight in the contest with six boards of her own and blocking one shot.
Â
Meanwhile, Alabama A&M had three players in double figures – led by Deshawna Haprer with 16 points. De'Asia Thomas had 10 rebounds to lead all players, as well. All 11 players that touched the court for Alabama State scored at least one point in the game.
