MONTGOMERY, Ala. | For the second time this season Alabama State won in walk-off fashion, using a single off the bat of
Angel Jimenez to defeat Oakland 6-5 and clinch the series at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Saturday night.
Alabama State (5-1) led most of the game until Oakland took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning off reliever
Ryan Velazquez (1-1). However, the Hornets answered with a
Santiago Garcia single to center on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth. He was lifted for pinch runner
Kenny Allred who scored from first just two pitches later when
Trenton Jamison lined a double to the centerfield wall to tie the game at 5-all.
After Jamison advanced to third on a wild pitch,
Dilan Espinal was walked on four pitches and
Chris Lewis five to load the bases for Jimenez. The sophomore worked the count full and delivered a base hit through the right side of a drawn-in infield for the winning run.
Jamison finished with a career-night, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and a run batted in; while Espinal went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Jabronski Williams picked up another two-hit night in the series for the Hornets who go for the series sweep tomorrow.
Velazquez, one of four pitchers used on the night, picked up the win despite giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. He lasted 2.1 innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits with a strikeout.
Gage Dollar got the start and last 2.0 innings and gave up three runs on a hit with four strikeouts, while
Britt Buckelew worked 4.2 innings and allowed just one run on six hits.
Alabama State and Oakland wrap up the series Sunday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
