MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State used the arm of
Austin King and a grand slam from
Ian Matos to pull away from Oakland 11-1 and complete the series sweep at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Sunday afternoon.
King (1-0) kept Oakland off-balance for most of the day, giving up just three hits in 6.0 innings of work; facing just three batters over the limit. He finished the day with one walk and four strikeouts to earn his first collegiate victory.
Breon Pooler came on in the seventh, logging 3.0 innings of relief and allowed one run (unearned) off of three hits with three strikeouts.
Alabama State (6-1) pounded out 11 hits in the win, with the biggest coming in the second with the Hornets leading 3-0. With the bases loaded,
Ian Matos connected on a 2-1 pitch and sent it over the left center field wall for his first collegiate home run and cleared the bases to give Alabama State a 7-0 lead.
The Hornets added three more in the sixth, including a pair of runs on a groundout off the bat of
Cristopher DeGuzman.
Trenton Jamison was able to score on the play, and
Dilan Espinal scored all the way from second on the groundout to short to give Alabama State a 10-0 lead.
They would add another run in the inning on an RBI single from
Cameron Hearn to extend the lead to 11-0, before Oakland scored their lone run in the top half of the ninth.
Hearn finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Matos finished 2-for-4 with a double to go along with his home run. Espinal (2-for-5) and
AJ Gardner (2-for-4) each finished with a pair of hits in the win.
