Jacknell Guzman were rewarded for their efforts during the 2020 season by the Black College Nines, announced by the publication.
Guzman was named the Black College Nines Pitcher of the Year after he finished the shortened season with a perfect 3-0 record in four starts, leading the nation in complete games with three. He finished the year with a 2.05 earned run average, while allowing just 20 hits in 30.2 innings pitched. The junior allowed just 11 runs, seven of which were earned and struck out 31 hitters – who hit just .187 against him this season.
Meanwhile, Vazquez was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Hornets to a 14-4 record during the season and a perfect Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record. The Hornets were also receiving votes in the final NCBWA poll prior to the season's end. Vazquez led the Hornets to the top 10 in bases on balls and triples on the season, while picking up his 100th victory as the head coach of the program.
Alabama State was off to its best start since the 2014 season through the first 18 games of the season.
