ITTA BENA, Miss. | Alabama State rode the arm of
Austin King and pounded out three home runs on the way to winning their seventh consecutive game with a 10-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Sunday afternoon.
Alabama State (13-3, 3-0 SWAC) stayed undefeated in conference play and swept their third consecutive series and fourth weekend with the win. They also remaining perfect (13-0) in weekend games, including 4-0 in games on Sunday.
The Hornets were able to jump on top of Mississippi Valley State with a pair of runs in the first inning, while scoring eight of their 10 runs in the first four innings of the game.
Ian Matos started the scoring for Alabama State with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning. They added another run in the second on a
Luis Rodriguez single to score
Chris Lewis, before Mississippi Valley State scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the inning to trim the score to 3-1.
Alabama State added two more in the third on a Matos sacrifice fly and a
Trenton Jamison home run to push the lead to 5-1, before three more in the fourth came off the bat of
Jabronski Williams on a three-run home run to extend the lead to 8-1. Mississippi Valley State scored another in the seventh, before Alabama State added a pair in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly and a single to right center by
Chris Lewis for the final margin.
Williams and Lewis each led Alabama State with three hits each, while
Austin King (2-0) picked up the win working 6.0 innings and allowing just one run off two hits and recording 11 strikeouts. He was the first of three pitchers on the day for Alabama State, with
Ryan Velazquez and
Britt Buckelew each seeing action on the day. The trio combined for 15 strikeouts, giving Alabama State 45 total strikeouts against Mississippi Valley State in 27 innings.
The Hornets return to action Tuesday night in a two-game mid-week series, hosting Valparaiso at 6 pm. Admission to all home games at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex for $5.
