BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State placed nine individuals inside the top 10 as it finished its season-opening weekend at the Vulcan Invite Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Hornets' best finishes of the day came from
Tionna Brown,
David East and Marcus Cole who all finished third in their respective events.
Brown finished just a tenth of a second behind Tynia Gaither (adidas) in the women's 60-meter dash at 7.59 seconds. Her counterpart on the men's side, East placed third in a tight 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds – .04 off the lead.
Cole's third place finish in the high jump marked the best of the day on the field side of things. He touched 2.00 meters with his jump to come in a couple of places behind Corvell Todd's (Southern Miss) 2.10-meter jump.
Also in the high jump,
Xavier Clark placed tenth with a jump of 1.85 meters.
Demier Shipley brought home a ninth-place finish in the triple jump after leaping out to 12.78 meters.
Dasia Newell was able to finish tenth in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.50 meters.
Back on the track side,
Shamia Jones placed tenth in the women's mile run after finishing with a time of 5:29.39.
Abdi Hussein also finished tenth in the men's mile, coming across the line at 4:27.24.
Following his impressive second place finish in the event yesterday,
Ulyesses Grace just missed qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds – just six hundredths from making the finals.
