BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Marcus Cade claimed a pair of gold medals at the KMS Open Sunday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex, claiming gold in the long jump and triple jump.
Cade cleared a distance of 7.15 meters in the long jump to claim gold and was joined in the top three by teammate
Xavier Clark who finished third with a distance of 6.96 meters. He also claimed gold in the triple jump with a distance of 14.48 meters. Not only did he win a pair of events, but Cade also finished fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.00 meters.
"We made steps today in the right direction," Alabama State head track and field coach
Ritchie Beene said. "We are getting better as a team each week, we just need more people making those steps."
Abdi Hussein finished second overall in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:18.71, while he also finished fifth overall in the 5000-meters with a time of 15:25.20. Meanwhile,
Ulyesses Grace recorded another top eight finish on the year, finishing fourth overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.12 seconds – just .06 behind his season-best time ran at the Blazer Invite back on January 15.
In other field events,
Cedric Jones finished seventh in the pole vault with a height of 4.10 meters.
Halima Barlow advanced through the 60-meter prelims with a time of 7.66 seconds and finished sixth overall in the event finals as shaved off 0.01 seconds on her to cross the line in a time of 7.65 seconds, the second-fastest time on the team this season. Although she finished sixth overall, she was the top collegiate athlete to cross the line finishing ahead of Louisiana Tech's Claudasha Watson.
Meanwhile, in the 200-meter dash, the Lady Hornets had a pair of top eight finishes with
Amari Newsom finishing fourth in a time of 24.91 seconds, and
Ulani Toussaint eight in a time of 25.27 seconds. The time by Newsome was the top collegiate time in the field.
Newsom also led a pair of runners in the top eight in the 400-meters, finishing second overall with a time of 58.00 seconds. She was joined in the top eight by
Vinnelle Grant, who finished eighth overall with a time of 59.16 seconds. Grant also finished fifth in the 600-meters with a time of 1:41.09, finishing just ahead of teammate Jamila Thomas in sixth with a time of 1:41.42.
Michaela Lewis finished third overall in the 800-meters with a time of 2:15.48, while
Shamia Jones finished eighth overall in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:24.04.
Taranique Alexander recorded a top-eight finish in the triple jump, finishing sixth overall with a distance of 11.34 meters.
In their first relay competition of the season, the Lady Hornets finished second overall in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:50.49 and finished as the top collegiate team. The time was two seconds ahead of UAPB, who finished third overall.
