BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State redshirt sophomore
Kenny Strawbridge (Rockford, Ill.) was named to the Second Team Preseason All-Conference team, announced by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) on Wednesday morning.
Strawbridge was second on the team in scoring last season at 10.5 points per game, scoring 189 total points in 18 games during the shortened season where the Hornets played conference-only games. He shot 35.9 (61-of-170) percent from the floor and 23.4 (11-of-47) percent from beyond the arc.
The redshirt sophomore led the team from the free throw line, shooting 71.8 (56-of-78) percent from the free throw line. He was also second on the team in rebounding at 7.2 rebounds per game, grabbing 130 total including 32 offensive rebounds. Strawbridge also dished out 24 assists, recorded 14 steals and six blocked shots.
He joins John Walker III (Texas Southern), Justin Hopkins (Texas Southern), MJ Randolph (Florida A&M), and Jayden Saddler (Southern) on the second team. The first team is made up of Preseason Player of the Year Jawaun Daniels (Prairie View A&M), Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Jayveous McKinnis (Jackson State), Cameron Christian (Grambling State), Garrett Hicks (Alabama A&M), and Jalen Johnson (Alabama A&M).
Meanwhile, the Hornets were picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll on a vote from the league's head coaches and sports information directors with 125 total votes. They were just behind Alcorn State (128) in seventh and Florida A&M (138) in sixth. The top five included Texas Southern (237), Prairie View A&M (204), Jackson State (202), Grambling State (168), and Southern (167).
Alabama State opens the season against Mobile in an exhibition game at 7 pm on November 4 inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
