Alabama State sweeps Mississippi Valley for 10th straight win

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Alabama State (14-14, 11-2 SWAC) took a 3-0 road sweep over Mississippi Valley State inside the R.W. Harrison Complex on Sunday afternoon to win their tenth straight game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets started off slow in the opening set, dropping the first three points before falling behind 7-3.
  • After calling a timeout, Alabama State responded with a run to tie the score at 12-12, forcing a Mississippi Valley timeout.
  • Out of the break the Hornets took the lead and did not trail the rest of the set, continuing to gain control. They extended their lead to 21-14 before the next stoppage of play and finished the set with a 25-15 win.
  • Jada Rhodes (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Mahogany Vinson (Richton Park, Ill.) led the Hornets in the first, each earning four kills.
  • Mississippi Valley scored first in the second but was immediately followed by a run that found Alabama State leading 5-2.
  • The teams tied four times throughout the match, with the last being at 11-11, before a kill from Kalysia Bates (Phenix City, Ala.) sparked a 11-3 run from the Hornets who finished off the second 25-18.
  • The third set was a tight battle to start with both teams matching runs and finding themselves tied three times – the latest at 15-15.
  • After a called timeout from Mississippi Valley, Alabama State finished off the match with a 8-3 run to finish off the sweep.
GAME NOTES
  • The win not only ensured a sweep of the series between the Delta Devilettes, but also extended the Alabama State win streak to ten games and 13 of their last 15.
  • Bates and Vinson led the Hornets with nine kills each, followed by Rhodes logged five kills and six digs and Amaya Finley (Stockton, Calif.) who earned four kills and two aces on the afternoon.
  • Boland recorded a match-high 19 assists on the day along with two digs and an ace against the Delta Devilettes
UP NEXT
Alabama State will finish their road trip with a trip to Jackson State on Monday, with first serve scheduled for 6 pm.
