MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opens the 2021 season Wednesday night, hosting Troy at the ASU Soccer Complex with kick set for 7 pm.
The Hornets last took the field November 7, 2019 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament, falling to Prairie View A&M in the opening round. Meanwhile, Troy (2-9-1) played a fall schedule comprised of Sun Belt Conference games only.
Alabama State returns its four top scorers from a season ago, including a pair of First Team Preseason All-Conference selections in
Isabella Beortegui and
Mary Martin Mooneyham who combined for 20 total points, Beortegui led Alabama State goals scored (six) and points (12), while Mooneyham added four goals (eight points) last season.
Ashley Thomas, a preseason Second Team selection, was second on the team in scoring in 2019 with nine total points including four goals, while
Janae Brown added three goals and a pair of assists (eight total points).
The meeting will be the 13th meeting all-time between the two schools, with the Trojans winning 2-0 in their last meeting back on August 22, 2017.
Fans are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs to the ASU Soccer Complex and to enter the complex on the West side and not behind the team's benches, remaining socially distant. Masks must be worn at all times throughout the contest as Alabama State University and its athletic facilities are mask mandatory.
