BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State claimed three of the four Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Track and Field weekly honors, released by the conference office Friday afternoon.
On the men's side, the Hornets swept the awards with
Marcus Cade being named the Field Athlete of the Week and
Abdi Hussein earning the Track Athlete of the Week. Cade claimed a pair of gold medals at the KMS Open this past Sunday, winning both the long jump and triple jump. He cleared a distance of 7.15 meters in the long jump to claim gold and was joined in the top three by teammate
Xavier Clark who finished third with a distance of 6.96 meters. He also claimed gold in the triple jump with a distance of 14.48 meters. Not only did he win a pair of events, but Cade also finished fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.00 meters.
Meanwhile, Hussein finished second overall in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:18.71, while he also finished fifth overall in the 5000-meters with a time of 15:25.20.
On the women's side,
Halima Barlow was named the Track Athlete of the Week after her performance in the 60-meters at the KMS Open. She advanced through the 60-meter prelims with a time of 7.66 seconds and finished sixth overall in the event finals as shaved off 0.01 seconds on her to cross the line in a time of 7.65 seconds, the second-fastest time on the team this season. Although she finished sixth overall, she was the top collegiate athlete to cross the line finishing ahead of Louisiana Tech's Claudasha Watson.
Alabama State returns to action Sunday in Birmingham at the South Alabama Invitational.
