Alabama State blasts Mississippi Valley State in series opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State pulled away from Mississippi Valley State by scoring all ten runs in the first five innings as the Hornets picked up a 10-1 victory at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Friday afternoon.

Alabama State (4-10) grabbed an early lead as Trenton Jamison homered to left field to take the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the next frame, the Hornets added three more runs after Jamison singled with the bases loaded bringing in both Hunter May and Jayden Sloan, while Abner Benitez singled later on to bring in the final run of the inning to put the Hornets up 4-0.  
 
Mississippi Valley scored their lone run in the fourth, however the lead grew to 5-1 in the bottom half of the inning after another homer from Jamison to left center.
 
The Hornets added five more runs in the fifth, first from a three-run homer from AJ Gardner and another RBI single from Jamison. Jabronski Williams scored the final run off a single from Chris Lewis to give Alabama a 10-1 lead.

Jamison finished 4-for-5 with two homers and game-high five RBIs, three runs scored, Lewis finished 2-for-5 with an RBI of his own, while Gardner also added a home run in the afternoon.
 
Austin King (2-1) picked up the win for the Hornets, pitching five innings and allowing a run and just four hits. Osvaldo Mendez pitched two innings and gave up just one hit followed by Alexander Castro who finished the game

Nicholas Johnson picked up the loss for the Delta Devils after pitching five innings before Angel Maldonado came in for relief.  
 
Due to COVID-19 protocols only those listed on the player pass list will be admitted into the venue due to socially distant seating. Alabama State is a mask mandatory campus, as are each of the athletic venues.
