MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State split a pair of conference games against Texas Southern on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 4-3 in eight innings before falling 10-3 in the nightcap.
Alabama State 4, Texas Southern 3
Alabama State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as
Kindall DeRamus scored off of a sacrifice fly from
Alex Massie, before Texas Southern responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Each team was held scoreless over the next three innings, before the Lady Hornets added two more runs in the sixth, the first from a
Kaley Anthony single to bring in
Lauryn Maher, while
Jaeda Gardner scored later off a single from
Taliya Talley on the next at bat to retake a 3-2 lead.
Trailing by a single run heading into the final frame, Texas Southern tied the ball game at 3-3 with two outs and held Alabama State scoreless in the bottom half to force extra innings.
After Alabama State got out of the top half of the inning with two Texas Southern players left on base, Massie started off the bottom of the eighth with a single, followed by a double from
Morgan Gaither two batters later to put both in scoring position. The Lady Hornets scored the game-winning run after Anthony brought pinch runner
Arianna Atchley home to gain the 4-3 victory.
Skyler Sullivan (5-5) gained the win with a complete game, facing 36 batters and allowing nine hits on the day. Naomi Reyes (1-7) also pitched a complete game for Texas Southern, however picked up the loss.
Texas Southern 10, Alabama State 3
Texas Southern rebounded after the loss in game one and put up three runs in the opening frame of game two, followed by four runs in the second and two more in the third to gain a 9-0 lead.
Alabama State added a run in the bottom half of the third inning as Gardner singled and later scored off a double from Atchley.
After another run by the Lady Tigers in the fifth, the Lady Hornets added a pair of scores in the bottom half of the frame, as Gardner singled and later scored off an error followed by a single from Massie that brought in
Jamaica Flowers to reduce the Texas Southern lead to 10-3.
The Lady Hornets pounded out seven hits in the game, with Gardner picking up a team-high three hits.
Blair Mims (0-2) suffered the loss, working 1.1 innings and allowed seven runs off of seven hits, before giving way to
Vanessa Bradford who pitched the remainder of the game, allowing three runs on two hits.
