Alabama State shuts out Alcorn State in series opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Two Alabama State pitchers held Alcorn State to just four hits on the afternoon as the Hornets won the series opener over the Braves 6-0 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Friday night.

After two scoreless innings, Alabama State (7-11, 4-3 SWAC) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third when Dilan Espinal singled to center to drive in Hunter May for the 1-0 lead, followed by a single from Trenton Jamison to right to bring in Espinol later. Jabronski Williams scored the last run of the inning after Santiago Garcia drew a walk with the bases loaded.

The Hornets extended the lead in the fifth when Cristopher DeGuzman scored off a single from Garcia to take a 4-0 lead. In the eighth, Jamison added another RBI to his totals as he reached on a fielder's choice to score Abner Benitez before May scored the final run off a DeGuzman single for the 6-0 final.

May finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Jamison knocked in a pair of RBI along with four other Hornets earning hits on the day. Jacknell Guzman (1-1) picked up the win, working 6.0 innings and allowing four hits and striking out five, while Payton Harris came in for relief and finished the remaining three innings without giving up a hit and striking out four in the win.

Due to COVID-19 protocols only those listed on the player pass list will be admitted into the venue due to socially distant seating. Alabama State is a mask mandatory campus, as are each of the athletic venues.
