PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Alabama State used a goal in the 87th minute Friday to upend defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Prairie View A&M on the road, 1-0.
"This was a really hard fought win on the road," Alabama State head coach
Jodie Smith said. "I am very pleased with our fitness and ability to be able to compete for 90 minutes. We are showing a knack for finishing on set pieces, now we need to rest up tomorrow and get ready for Texas Southern on Sunday."
Mary Martin Mooneyham took a ball off a corner from
Teaggan Ilela and pushed it past the keeper on a header for the only goal of the contest to give Alabama State (4-2-1, 4-0-1 SWAC) the win. The goal was the first for Mooneyham this season.
The Lady Hornets were able to get six shots off against Prairie View A&M, with two of those coming from
McKenna Wiscombe. Meanwhile,
Madison Roop recorded her third shutout of the season with five saves.
Alabama State returns to play Sunday afternoon on the road in Houston, facing Texas Southern. The match is scheduled to start at 1 pm.
