Alabama State falls to No. 18 Mississippi State, faces North Dakota Wednesday night

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped a 10-4 contest to No. 18 Mississippi State at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex Tuesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning, Mississippi State put three on the board in the top of the second inning to take an early lead. However, Alabama State answered with a pair of their own in the inning scoring the first on a Jazmine Dodd single that scored Morgan Gaither. They added the second run in the inning when Destinee Dixon singled down the right field line to score Dodd and trim the lead to 3-2.

The Bulldogs added two more in each the third and fourth innings to take a 7-2 lead before Alabama State added another two to trim the lead to 7-4. The two runs scored when Madison Myers put the ball in play and reached on an error that allowed Dodd and Gaither to score, but that was as close as the Lady Hornets would get as Mississippi State added a run in each the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings for the final margin.

Dodd finished the day 3-for-3 as Alabama State collected seven hits in the loss. Meanwhile, Gaither finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Dixon 2-for-2.

Blair Mims (0-1), one of three pitchers used by Alabama State, suffered the loss working 3.0 innings in the start, scattering five hits and allowing five runs while striking out two. Skyler Sullivan pitched the middle three innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, while Myers came on for the final inning and allowed one run.

Alabama State returns to action Wednesday night against North Dakota, with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm on the Hornet Sports Network. Only those listed on the player pass list will be allowed inside the Barbara Williams Softball Complex this season due to social distant seating and COVID-19 protocols. No tickets will be sold at any time for the venue, and masks are mandatory while visiting the Alabama State University campus and its athletic venues.
