MONTGOMERY, Ala. I Alabama State (8-21, 3-4 SWAC) shut out conference foe Jackson State 4-0 in the first game of the three-game series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets got on the board first in the bottom half of the second inning when
Jamaica Flowers brought home
Jazmine Dodd with a sacrifice fly to center field for the first score.
After a scoreless third, Alabama State added another run when
Kindall DeRamus scored off a wild pitch, and added two more in the next inning with scores from
Arianna Atchley. Later in the frame
Alex Massie singled to bring in
Madison Myers for the final score.
Seven different Hornets picked up hits on the afternoon, while Atchley, DeRamus, Dodd, and Myers all scored runs.
Skyler Sullivan (8-8) picked up the win for Alabama State after pitching a complete game giving up just four hits and struck out four on the day, while Kayla Owens (5-6) lost the decision allowing seven Hornet hits and striking out five.
The two teams return to action for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon starting at 12 and 2 pm at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. Both games will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
Only those listed on the player pass list will be allowed inside the Barbara Williams Softball Complex this season due to social distant seating and COVID-19 protocols. No tickets will be sold at any time for the venue, and masks are mandatory while visiting the Alabama State University campus and its athletic venues.
