Alabama State wins second straight at home against Grambling to secure weekend series win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. I Alabama State (15-17, 9-7 SWAC) pounded out 15 hits to take a 12-2 win in seven innings over Grambling State in their second game of the weekend series at the Wheeler Watkins Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

After holding Grambling scoreless in the first, Alabama State got on the board early as Santiago Garcia hit a two run homer to left center in the bottom of the inning.

The Hornets extended their lead in the second frame with Kerrigan Edmonson bringing in a run after a bunt single to score Chris Lewis, followed by a score from Dilan Espinal on a groundout. Edmondson scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.

Grambling State responded to reduce the lead with scores in both the fourth and fifth innings, however the Hornets continued their offensive production as Jayden Sloan singled to right to drive in two runs in to put the Hornets up 7-2 heading.

Alabama State added four more runs in the sixth with an RBI double from Cristopher DeGuzman to bring home Trent, a sacrifice fly from Chris Lewis to score DeGuzman and a triple from Edmondson to bring in two scores. Trenton Jamison singled to center to bring in the last run of the game in the seventh for the final score.

Jamison and Lewis both went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Hornets on the day, while Edmondson went 2-for-3 to go along with three RBI and a run scored.

Jeremy Rivera (1-0) picked up the win for Alabama State, working 6.0 innings and giving up two runs off of six hits to go along with nine strikeouts. Osvaldo Mendez came in for the final inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1 pm in Montgomery, and due to COVID-19 protocols and socially distant seating the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex remains a Player Pass List only entry facility. All concessions remain cashless, and Alabama State University remains mask-mandatory.
