MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State finished off a non-conference series sweep of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) West Division leader Grambling State with a 7-6 win Sunday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Alabama State (16-17) used a three-run seventh inning to pull away from the Tigers before adding two more in the eighth for a cushion they would need in the Grambling State ninth inning. However, the Hornets didn't waste any time getting on the board as
Jabronski Williams hit a lead-off home run to right for a quick 1-0 lead, before
Santiago Garcia drove in
Cristopher DeGuzman for the early 2-0 lead.
It would stay that way until Grambling State scored a run in each the fourth and the fifth to tie things up midway through the contest before Alabama State erupted. The Hornets got things started on a two-out double from
Santiago Garcia before
Chris Lewis picked up a pair of RBIs on a triple to right that scored Garcia and
Hunter May, before Lewis himself scored on a throwing error for a 5-2 lead.
They added two more in the eighth on a
Trenton Jamison triple that scored Williams, before Jamison scored on a wild pitch for a 7-2 lead.
Grambling State was able to four runs across in the ninth off of
Payton Harris (2-1), the fourth of five pitchers used on the night for Alabama State, before
Jacknell Guzman came on to pick up his first save of the year. Harris finished the day with 4.0 innings and allowed four runs (none earned) on three hits with four strikeouts, while starter
Austin King went 3.2 innings and allowed just one run off of six hits.
Alabama State picked up nine hits on the day with three players picking up multiple hits led by Jamison who went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Garcia and Lewis each went 2-for-4.
