Alabama State blanks Alcorn State in series opener

LORMAN, Miss. | Alabama State pounded out double digit hits and held Alcorn State to just a pair in the series opener, a 13-0 seven inning run-rule win by the Hornets on Friday night.

Alabama State (17-17, 9-7 SWAC) took over second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Division by pounding out 13 hits including four extra base hits in the win. Jabronski Williams and Trenton Jamison combined to pick up six hits at the top of the order for the Hornets, with Jamison connecting a two-run home run to highlight a three-run first inning. Chris Lewis added a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead after one for Alabama State.

The Hornets added to the lead in the second with a single by Cristopher DeGuzman before adding a pair of runs in each the third and fourth innings to push the lead to 8-0. Dilan Espinal drove in two runs with a double in the third, while DeGuzman recorded an RBI groundout in the fourth before a Santiago Garcia sacrifice fly for the 8-0 lead.

Alabama State grew the lead to 9-0 on a Chris Lewis solo home run in the fifth, before adding four more in the seventh beginning with a two-run error by Alcorn State. Jayden Sloan and Jamison added RBI hits for the final margin.

Williams led Alabama State at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Jamison finished 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Seven other players each picked up a hit for Alabama State, with all nine position players who played picking up at least one hit in the win.

Breon Pooler (4-2) picked up the win, working 6.0 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out 10 compared to just four walks. Ryan Velazquez came on for the final inning and allowed just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

The two will meet in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 pm, moving the series up due to weather predicted for the area on Sunday.
