BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State finished the UAB Spring Invitational with several top-10 finishes on both the men and women's side of the meet.
Tionna Brown had a standout performance for the Hornets, winning the 100-meter (11.51) and 200-meter events (23.65), followed by
Nia Jack who finished second in the 100-meters (11.86) and
Halima Barlow who finished third in the 200-meter (23.96).
The Hornets had four top ten finishes in the 400-meter events with
Amari Newsom finishing fifth (56.31),
Michaela Lewis sixth (56.46),
Ulani Toussaint finishing eighth (56.69) and
Vinnelle Grant ninth (56.84).
In the 4x100 relay, the group of
Kyana Evans, Jack, Toussaint and Brown earned a first place finish (45.13), while
Ariayanna Val earned a tenth place finish with a time of 14.57 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Kristen Thompson led the Lady Hornets with a fifth place finish in the discus throw (42.20 meters), while her teammate
Xiquaria Reliford finished ninth in the same event with a distance of 38.80 meters. Thompson also finished in the top ten in both the shot put (10th, 12.52 meters) and hammer throw (9th, 42.69 meters) and was followed by
Bridgette Williams who finished tenth in the hammer throw with a distance of 41.72 meters.
On the men's side,
Matthew Clarke (10.50) and
David East (10.51) finished in the first two spots in the 100-meters and were followed shortly after by teammate
Mason Foster in fourth (10.90). Clarke also won the 200-meter with a time of 21.32.
The Hornets also had top ten finishes in both the 400-meters with
Demier Shipley (2nd, 49.15) and the 1500-meters with
Abdi Hussein (10th, 3:58.08) and the 110-meter hurdles with Ulysses Grace earning a third place finish (14.23) and
Ramir Wiggins who finished 10th (15.95).
In the high jump event,
Marcus Cade tied for third at 1.98 meters, while
Xavier Clarke finished tied for eighth at 1.78 meters and also finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.53 meters.
Daniel Bayeshea earned a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.95 meters and a sixth place finish in the discus throw with a distance of 42.32 meters while his teammate
Caesar Kemp finished fifth in the event with a throw of 46.09 meters and second in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.98 meters.
