MONTGOMERY, Ala. I Alabama State used four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to secure a 10-3 win over in-state opponent North Alabama at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
After two scoreless innings, Alabama State got a run on the board in the bottom of the third after
Jabronski Williams scored off a double from
Santiago Garcia. The Hornets added four more runs in the fourth, with
Trenton Jamison bringing in a run off a single to left, followed by a single from
Cristopher DeGuzman to bring in Williams for his second run scored on the day. Garcia doubled again in his second at bat to bring home
Trenton Jamison for the final run of the inning to go up 5-0.
Alabama State continued to extend their lead in the fifth when Jamison drew a walk with the bases loaded, while DeGuzman brought home two more runs on a single to left. The Hornets stretched their lead to 9-0 on a muffed throw from North Alabama before ending the frame.
North Alabama got on the board in the seventh, earning their first hits of the game and scoring three runs in the seventh, however the Hornets responded by adding a run in the eighth for the final score.
DeGuzman finished the day with three hits, three RBI and a run scored, while Garcia totaled three hits and four RBI.
AJ Gardner and
Dale Francis each added two hits on the day, with Gardner also scoring two runs.
Osvaldo Mendez (1-2) picked up the win for the Hornets, working 6.0 innings and giving up just two runs  off of two hits while striking out nine.
Jeremy Rivera came in for relief for the final three innings, giving up just two hits and earning his first save on the year.
The Hornets will host their second game in as many days for another mid-week matchup, this time against Jacksonville State on Wednesday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Only those listed on the player pass list will be admitted into the venue due to socially distant seating. Alabama State is a mask mandatory campus, as are each of the athletic venues.
