Lorman, Miss. |Â Alabama State (14-27, 9-8 SWAC) dropped both games of a road doubleheader to open the series against Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon, each by a score of 4-2.
Alcorn State 4, Alabama State 2
The Lady Hornets got on the board first in the opening game, scoring two runs in the second inning off an RBI single from
Destinee Dixon to score
Alex Massie followed by a sacrifice fly to left field from
Jamaica Flowers to bring home Dixon.
The Lady Braves closed the gap in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1, and went on to add three runs in the fourth to take the 4-2 lead.
Alabama State could not respond as they left two runners on base in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings before failing to get any runners on in the seventh to drop the first game.
Massie led the Hornets from the plate in game one, going 2-for-3 and scoring a run, while Dixon recorded a hit, RBI and scored a run of her own.
Skyler Sullivan (14-9) worked 6.0 innings in the circle, allowing three earned runs off six hits and striking out two on the day.
Alcorn State 4, Alabama State 2
Alcorn State started the second matchup by scoring in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead that they held until a response from Alabama State in the fifth.
Kaley Anthony got the Hornets on the board in the fifth after getting on base with a double to left field and later stealing home for a run.
Morgan Gaither later hit an RBI single to center to bring
Arianna Atchley in for the second run of the inning to take the one run lead.
The Lady Braves responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs off an RBI triple and added onto the lead with a run in the sixth for the final score.
Alabama State recorded seven hits in game two, with Massie and
Madison Myers leading the way with two hits each.
Vanessa Bradford (0-9) pitched for 6.0 innings, and gave up two earned runs off three hits on the afternoon.
The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 am.
