PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Alabama State earned points for both, the men and women, on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships Thursday.
On the men's side, Alabama State finds itself in fourth place after just three scored events with 13 total points. They trail the leader, Prairie View A&M with 36 points, while UAPB is sitting in second with 28 points and Texas Southern third with 18.
Abdi Hussein led the Hornets on the opening day of the championships with a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:54.31, while
Caesar Kemp scored in the hammer throw with a fourth- place finish after a distance of 46.09 meters.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, Alabama State is third after just two scored events with 10 points, trailing Grambling State with 15 points and Prairie View A&M with 11.
The Lady Hornets were able to get points from
Penina Chelangat in the 10,000 meters with a fifth-place finish in a time of 46:56.97 and from
Bridgette Williams in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.40 meters.
The meet continues with day two on Friday.
