Women second, men fourth heading into final day of SWAC Championships

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | The Alabama State women find themselves in second place and the men fourth heading into the final day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with Caesar Kemp picking up a conference title in the shot put.

Through seven scored events, Alabama State is in second on the women's side with 50 points and trailing Prairie View A&M by just seven (57 total points). They are ahead of Southern (38) in third and Grambling State (33) in fourth.

Dasia Newell paced Alabama State on day two of the meet with a second-place finish in the Heptathlon with 4,103 points finishing behind eventual champion Safiya John of UAPB. Meanwhile, Shamia Jones finished in second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:10.47 to score points for the Lady Hornets.

Two other Lady Hornets finished second in the respective events for Alabama State with Bridgette Williams recording a distance of 38.38 meters in the javelin, while Taranique Alexander finished second in the long jump with a distance of 6.03 meters. Kristen Thompson scored points in a pair of events as she finished third in the shot put with a distance of 12.99 meters, and she finished seventh in the javelin with a distance of 33.17 meters.

Alabama State had several student-athletes qualify for their finals including four in the 100-meter dash in Tionna Brown, Nia Jack, Halima Barlow, and Ulani Toussaint; while Brown, Barlow, and Amari Newsome all qualified out of the 200-meter prelims. A trio of student-athletes moved on in the 400-meter dash including Kyana Evans, Vinnelle Grant, and Newsom, while Evans and Jasmyne Joseph moved on in the 400-meter hurdles.

Michaela Lewis moved on in the 800-meter prelims after setting a new SWAC record in the prelims with a time of 2:05.45 (breaking the old mark of 2:06.50) and was joined in the out of the prelims by Jones.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, Alabama State finds itself in fourth place with 42 points through seven events scored. They trail Texas Southern (46), UAPB (51), and Prairie View A&M (75).

Nicholas Moseley finished fifth in the Decathlon to start the day for Alabama State with 5,071 points –less than 400 from fourth. He was joined in the standings by teammate Cedric Jones, who finished sixth with 4,929 points. Meanwhile, Marcus Cade picked up points by reaching the medal stand in the long jump after finishing third with a distance of 7.02 meters, while teammate Xavier Clarke picked up points with a seventh-place finish at 6.92 meters.

Kemp picked up the first conference championship of the outdoor season for the Hornets in the shot put with a throw of 16.86 meters. He was joined in picking up points in the event by Daniel Bayeshea with a fifth-place finish after a distance of 14.66 meters.

Several student-athletes moved out of the prelims including a trio in the 100-meters with David East leading the way. He was joined by Matthew Clarke and Mason Foster in the event, while Ulyesses Grace moved out of the prelims in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.72 seconds. Meanwhile, East, Clarke, and Foster all qualified out of the 200-meters, with Ricky Thornton and Kevin Smith going one-two in the 800-meter prelims.

The meet concludes tomorrow in Prairie View where a champion will be crowned for both the men and the women.
